CSU politician georg nublein suspends his office as deputy chairman of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group due to the corruption investigations against his person.
This was announced by the lawyer of the swabian deputy on friday. The 51-year-old is being investigated, among other things, on initial suspicion of corruptibility and bribery of mandate holders in connection with the purchase of corona respiratory protection masks.
Nublein’s lawyer stated that his client considered the accusations to be unfounded. However, it is not yet foreseeable when nublein "will be able to comment on the details of this obviously complex investigation," emphasized lawyer gero himmelsbach.
The general public prosecutor’s office in munich had 13 objects in germany and liechtenstein searched and evidence seized on thursday for this reason. Investigators did not give any further details on friday either. It is still unclear how long the evaluation of the seized documents will take, said senior public prosecutor klaus ruhland. In addition to nublein, there is a second defendant in the case whose identity is unclear.
On thursday morning, the bundestag had initially lifted the immunity of the deputy from munsterhausen (gunzburg district). Immediately thereafter, the searches of, among others, nublein’s bundestag office and his constituency office in gunzburg began. According to information from security circles, in bavaria alone more than 30 officers from the state criminal investigation office and tax investigation department were involved in the searches.
Immediately after the searches, nublein initially remained silent about the accusations. The CSU politician has been a member of the bundestag since 2002, and has been deputy chairman of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group since 2014. Nublein focuses on the environment, nature conservation, health, the economy and energy.
