After the heatwave summer: what to look out for during harvesting

The rough drought and heat have u. A. Messed up the harvest time. Thus, many potatoes that are still in the ground, already begin to germinate. Also the apples and pears belong this year very early from the tree, so that they last longer in storage. Most of the fruits have been dropped early by the trees in order to survive on their own. Often there is not much left of the very coarse fruit hangings. You can hardly believe your eyes when whole sections of branches, especially on apple trees, start to bleed. So even some chestnuts are in full bloom. When farmers cultivate their fields now, huge clouds of soil dust are rising. Now we can only hope that nature will slowly return to normal and will be replaced by a "normal" crop weather supports farmers and gardeners.

Do not harvest wet fruit

Wet fruit should not be harvested if possible. When stored, the moisture can remain at the contact points for a long time. This destroys the protective wax layer on the fruit peel at these points. This makes it easy for harmful fungi such as putrefactive bacteria to penetrate.

Sow lettuce at the beginning of september

At the beginning of the month it is still possible to sow lettuce. It yields well until the end of the growing season. Red-leaved varieties are much more frost-hardy in autumn than the yellow-leaved ones. The former can withstand temperatures as low as minus 7 degrees celsius without damage. Preserved varieties are "red salad bowl" and "red fire". Especially interesting is lettuce for raised beds. Conveniently, the lettuce leaves can be harvested continuously from the bottom to the top in suitable portions. This is also possible for wheelchair users.

Winter rye as a base

Winter rye, vetch or wheat can be sown on empty beds as a base. The plants remain over winter and provide a loosening of the soil. In the spring, the soil material is then dug under. Besides the loosening, the plant nutrients remain in the soil. The foundation is especially advantageous for sandy soil. "Heaviness" but the soil must be dug up in late autumn so that the frost can have its disruptive effect on the topsoil.

Harvest carrots and parsnips with foliage

To reduce nitrate levels in carrots and parsnips even after harvesting, it is advisable to harvest them with leaves. This should remain on the plants for at least 2 days after removal from the soil. Young strawberry plants: what to consider

The most favorable time for growing strawberries is mid august, but drought and vacation time upset the date. But now the work should be started soon. When buying young plants, pay special attention to good quality. The pot ball should above all be well rooted. On heavy soil it is advantageous to cultivate strawberries on raised ridges. Here the roots do not suffer from waterlogging during a rainy period. Because the soil walls warm up relatively quickly in the spring, the strawberry plants start growing very soon. Since the soil in the forests is neither too wet nor too cold, the strawberries here hardly suffer from red root rot. Cultivation on earth dams also prevents the occurrence of gray mold, because the fruit grows above the layer of air near the ground. It also allows the air to circulate better and pass underneath the foliage.

Hornets and wasps slowly die off

After the heyday of the hornets and wasps, the volcanoes had reached their peak in mid august. But now they are slowly dying. Only fertilized females hibernate with luck in protected places and can found new colonies as new queens the next year. The old nests are no longer accepted already for hygienic reasons. Hectic movements are to be avoided in the vicinity of these insects. Especially rattling machines excite the volkers in their proximity very much. By the way, wasps and hornets don’t need to worry about building up their brood with protein-rich food like caterpillars and flies anymore. So now they make themselves with preference to self-sufficiency on sube food such as fruits and cakes.
