St. Xavier's College, NevtaSt. Xavier’s College is founded and managed by the Jesuit Fathers who are members of a Christian Religious Order known as Society of Jesus. The Society was founded by St. Ignatius of Loyola, a Spanish nobleman, to pass on to others a life-transforming religious experience he had while he was convalescing from a wound received in battle. An outstanding characteristic of this experience was that those who underwent it felt urged to work for one’s own salvation and the salvation of others, sacrificing self-will and self-interest. Although preaching was at first adopted as primary means of attaining this goal, the Jesuits soon realized the importance of education in achieving their goal. Before long they built a large network of educational institutions and laid the foundation for a magnificent educational tradition which earned for them the title School Teachers of Europe. Their achievement was the result of the toils of many selfless and dedicated Jesuits who, following the motto of the founder of the Society of Jesus, St. Ignatius, worked for "the greater glory of God," rather than their own personal glory. St. Xavier’s College, Nevta, is another milestone in that tradition.

The illustrious legacy of Jesuit education which started over four-and-a-half centuries ago continues even today. Jesuit educational institutions are large in number and they tell a story of great achievements. India is a case in point. In India the Jesuits manage hundreds of secondary schools, higher secondary schools and institutions of higher learning. To name a few in the field of higher education, we can cite institutions like:

  • Andhra Loyola College
  • Arul Anandar College, Karumathur
  • Loyola College, Chennai
  • St. Aloysius College, Mangalore

This story is repeated in other countries as well, especially in countries of Europe and the Americas. Together, they tell the story of the extent and quality of Jesuit education. This accomplishment was possible because Jesuits following their founder seeks what the Latin magis stands for, i.e. seeking what is the greatest and the best in every field.
